There are several reasons that people like to build their own equipment or do their own maintenance work. One of the big reasons is to save money but another reason is the satisfaction one gets from building something that works.
There is something each of us can do better than others and some things that a few of us just can't come to grips with. My wife Kathryn can grow about any kind of plant, build cabinets, paint beautiful pictures, and she is one of the best cooks I know but when it comes to plumbing or electrical wiring she is completely lost.
Another thing with "doing it yourself" is experience. You are going to pay for your education one way or the other. I paid for mine with mistakes and in my younger days I've spent more money trying to do work myself than what it would have cost if I had paid someone else to do it for me. If you buy materials for half the price of the manufactured item and break the parts trying to put them together, you don't save any money. Sometimes it ends up costing you more to "build it yourself" in the long run but in those cases you have to mark it up as educational expense.
