The Ponding Hobby can be adapted to fit any personality. It is the most versatile hobby I've ever seen. Below is a list of different personality types, and how ponding can suit them.
Laid Back Personality - For those of you who like to kick back with a cup of coffee or cool drink, and contemplate life, or what ever, you can have a pond that requires very little maintenance. This can be achieved by using native plants, goldfish with low stocking density, and not feeding them. Or, if you wish to have heavy fish loads with koi, and you want to feed them, you can invest in some of the more expensive bead filter systems, possibily in conjunction with a vortex system. This will require about 15 minutes of maintenance each week.
HyperActive Personality - If you are the hyper active type that likes to be doing something all the time you can design and build your own filtration system. If you desire you can even change it several times until you find the one you like. The possibilities are endless. You can also add additional ponds, add a stream, build a bridge, waterwheel, lighthouse, or enlarge your present pond. Do you suffer from boredom in the winter? Never fear! You can put a pond in your garage, basement, or even in your living room.
Frugal Personality - Want a water garden and don't like to spend money? Well, you can create a water garden out of anything that holds water and isn't toxic. Old bathtubs are a big favorite. My mother has one of those. You could even rig an old commode and keep Rosy Red minnows or Guppies in it. Use the tank for your filter. Add some plants and it becomes a vegi filter. This hobby is only limited by your imagination.
Argumentative Personality - Are you the type that likes to argue or get involved in heated debates? Well, ponding is the hobby for you. There are several topics that will always strike a cord. EPDM roofing vs. pond safe EPDM. Should you put gravel on the bottom or not? What is the best fish food? Just pick a side. You'll always find someone to disagree with you. Best of all, you can change sides any time. If you don't like the reasons for using one or the other; make up your own, like many I've known.
